Culzean Castle by Julie H Winte

A lovely family have just stayed with us. They had a great time in Ayrshire during the early May Bank Holiday Weekend. While they were with us they enjoyed walks in and around the garden. The eleven year old, Daniel enjoyed the large garden and was truly ‘eggsited’ when he saw the first Jackdaw egg on our breakfast room CCTV. Egg alert, egg alert he cried out to his parents. All the family had a go at choosing their favourite paintings from my artwork and Mum was fascinated by the painting I had done recently when I applied to go on Sky TV’s Landscape Artist of the Year.

We are fortunate enough to have lovely people managing Glenafton Caravan Park, which is a little further up the road from our B&B. Anne and Philip have made great improvements inside the pub, which now boasts a lovely function room and provides seasonal entertainment. The Sunday lunch is always hearty and very reasonably priced.

Now Anne and Philip have gone further with their improvements. They are in the process of sorting out the drainage on the road so a new road can be laid and they have cleared many fallen trees to make a very attractive walk into the woodland above the park, where there’s lots to discover.2015-01-29 10.33.55 2015-01-29 10.35.13 2015-01-29 10.36.06 2015-01-29 10.36.17 2015-01-29 10.37.01 2015-01-29 10.39.54

The area surrounding our B&B, Glenafton is one of outstanding natural beauty. We encourage you to take a short break here and enjoy all the area has to offer.

Last year we had our first eggs from our new Call ducks, they were great for baking, but a little too small for fried eggs, the white was a wee bit blue and there was not much of it. So I made lots of sponge cakes. Later in the season our Call ducks decided that they wanted to reproduce and laid their eggs in hard to reach places. We were successful at rearing the little beauties, they were much loved by children visiting the nearby caravan site. The yellow ducklings turned into white Call ducks, the brown and yellow ones turned into mallards and the yellow and grey ones turned into beige Call ducks.

This year now our ducklings are fully grown they have started laying eggs of their own. Some of the ducklings on the left were hatched in May and their eggs were laid in the first week of March. So at just ten months they are fully productive. As you can see from the photo on the right our rescue hens are still laying well and producing large brown  eggs, which are a feature of our hearty breakfasts.

Great news: One of my Chasing Sunset paintings sold at the weekend, through The Wellington Gallery in Kilmarnock, Scotland. The gallery had plenty of positive comments about my work and are optimistic about another couple of pieces. My philosophy is to paint landscapes of places I’ve have personally visited and I truly loved visiting Paris. In this photo you can see me painting in my studio at Afton Water B&B, where I host art workshops.

Today I collected twelve eggs from our rescue hens, they have settled well and are obviously enjoying roaming free in our half acre garden. The ducks are a joy to watch at the moment as they are trying to establish who will be mating pairs! On Sunday we made a record of the birds that visited the garden. We had: a nuthatch, four chaffinch, three robins, four great tits, four blue tits, four coal tits, three sparrows, a woodpecker, a green-finch, a blackbird and then the final flurry of activity at eleven o’clock was a mob of long-tailed tits that flew in and produced a splendid sight of bobbing tails, there must have been at least eight of these little wonders.

Chasing Sunsets: A solo art exhibition

Featuring original and local oil paintings by Julie H Winter
Date: 22nd – 25th August 2013. Time: 11am – 7pm daily.
Venue: Afton Water Gallery @ The Doctor’s House, Afton Road,
New Cumnock, East Ayrshire, KA18 4PR Scotland. UK.

This exhibition boasts an exhilarating collection of artworks by the talented local artist, Julie H Winter and includes several paintings that feature water in some way and show of the west coast of Ayrshire to its fullest with beautiful sunsets at Turnberry, Dunure, The Heads of Ayr and coming further inland, Loch Doon.

Julie has been inspired to paint the local area of Mauchline, Auckinleck, Cumnock and Sanquhar based on colours in a photograph by Local historian and keen photographer Bobby Guthrie, who thought New Cumnock was on fire on his way home one day in the early part of this summer.

Hope runs high that local people, their friends and family will enjoy the exhibition and that the weather will hold so that they can enjoy the beautiful views from the gallery and the hearty food served on Saturday and Sunday between 1pm – 5pm at The Hillside Inn, just above the gallery inside Glenafton Caravan Park.

Julie would like to thank all the local people and guests that have stayed at Afton Water B&B, who have shown their support by attending previous exhibitions and purchasing her original works. She is delighted to be part of the community of New Cumnock, where the kindness of folk and the local landscape are always an inspiration to her.
