Tintagel.
Most people come to Tintagel with a vague notion of its hazy Arthurian connections. The tangle of myth and legend should not be allowed to obscure the very great importance of Tintagel's actual history. Along with traces of over 70 rectangular buildings, there has been more imported post-Roman pottery found on Tintagel headland than in the rest of Britain put together. These finds, together with the depiction of Tintagel in twelfth century literature as the seat of the rulers of Cornwall, suggest that this was a significant royal stronghold in the sixth century. The dominant ruins today are those of the castle built in the thirteenth century by Earl Richard. The headland and castle are owned by the Duchy of Cornwall and managed by English Heritage.

The Old Post Office (owned by the National Trust) is one of the last original Tintagel buildings.

From the 17th to the 20th Century the main industry in the Tintagel area was slate quarrying and remains of this industry can be seen along the coast between Trebarwith Strand and Tintagel Island.

Most of modern Tintagel dates from the middle to late 19th century when the area benefited from the arrival of the railway (Camelford was the closest station), the Victorian renaissance in the Arthur legend (helped by the writings of great romantic authors such as Tennyson, Dickens and later Thomas Hardy) and the building of Camelot Castle Hotel. It was during this period that the village of Trevena was re-named as Tintagel (the name Tintagel originally related to the whole parish not the village).

The heyday of Tintagel was during the 1960's and 1970's with business thriving on a buoyant tourist trade. Today Tintagel is once again thriving due to renewed interest in the legend of King Arthur and the recent village regeneration programme.
